Course Introduction To Linguistics

Deskripsi Mata Kuliah

This course introduces linguistics as the scientific study of human language and examines the fundamental concepts, characteristics, branches, and analytical levels of language. It covers the origin and properties of human language, phonetics, phonology, word formation, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, discourse analysis, language acquisition, and sociolinguistics. Students learn to describe and analyse English language data, including the production and classification of speech sounds, word structure and formation, sentence structure, meaning, language use in context, discourse, language variation, and language-learning processes. Through collaborative case-based learning, students apply linguistic concepts to analyse English learners’ language problems and formulate relevant, inclusive, and context-sensitive pedagogical responses. The course develops critical and systematic thinking, promotes respect for linguistic diversity, and supports quality and equitable English language education in relation to SDG 4 and SDG 10.

Students are able to explain the fundamental concepts, characteristics, branches, and analytical levels of human language and linguistics, as well as their relevance to English language learning and teaching.
Students are able to identify, classify, and analyse spoken, written, and digital English language data at phonetic, phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, and discourse levels using appropriate linguistic terminology, analytical procedures, and relevant digital tools.

Students are able to critically analyse English learners’ language problems, language acquisition processes, and language variation by considering linguistic evidence and learners’ multilingual, sociocultural, and educational contexts.
Students are able to collaboratively apply linguistic evidence to formulate and communicate relevant, inclusive, ethical, and context-sensitive pedagogical responses to English language-learning problems, supported by the critical use of digital technologies and artificial intelligence.
