This course examines and discusses a summary of concepts, theories and frameworks for understanding and examining urban and rural development in developing countries. The rural section of the course provides critical analysis of processes of agrarian change in developing countries and gives students the opportunity to explore and reflect on current theoretical and policy-oriented debates related to issues such as the diversification of rural livelihoods, including sustainable rural living approaches and village interactions -city. Part of the course focuses on urban development analysis of past and possible future patterns and trends of urbanization in developing countries and offers students the opportunity to focus on some of the challenges facing urban settlements such as climate change, water and sanitation problems, urban poverty and marginalization, Urban food systems and consumption patterns. In these two sections alone, questions relating to gender will receive attention.
